The US OEM is growing its range of electric models
Ford has given a glimpse of two of its second-generation EVs, a truck and a three-row SUV, both set to be released in 2025.
The SUV will have some similarities to the Ford Expedition but will be “unlike anything else in the segment,” says Doug Field, the former Tesla and Apple executive brought into Ford in 2021 to head up advanced technology and embedded systems at the automaker.
“We could have converted an Expedition into an EV, but it would not have made for a very good EV and it would not have made for a very good Expedition,” Field told attendees at Ford’s annual Capital Markets Day in Dearborn, Michigan.
To power an existing Expedition would require a 150kWh battery to give it 300km of range on a highway, Field says. However, after redesigning the product to include low rolling resistance tyres, improving propulsion efficiency, lowering the ride height and changing the aerodynamics, the new product will need just a 100kWh battery to give it 350 miles of range or 300km cruising on a motorway at 70mph, according to Field.
