UK bus firm makes EV commitment
The country’s largest operator is putting in a 700+ order
UK bus and coach firm Stagecoach has committed to investing in acquiring EVs, as well as “significant” depot and infrastructure upgrades. It plans to add 715 new EVs to its fleet.
The commitment follows funding received from both the Zero-Emission Regional Bus Areas scheme and the Scottish Zero Emission Bus Challenge Fund.
Significant updates are being made to depots too, introducing EV charging, battery storage, and the installation of solar panels to reduce reliance on charging from the power grid.
The new fleet of EVs are already starting to enter service. When complete, they will mean 15pc of Stagecoach’s total fleet will be EV. Rapid charging infrastructure installed at a further 22 Stagecoach depots across the UK.
“We are thrilled to announce this transformative investment to our fleet, which will enable us to modernise and upgrade our infrastructure, paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient transport system for communities across the country,” says Tony Cockcroft, asset management and infrastructure director at Stagecoach.
The UK, as with 14 EU member states, has a target of 45pc of new bus contracts being for ZEVs. This has led to manufacturers, such as Scania, competing to bring new BEV bus offerings to market.
