Station operated by Einride in Lynwood, California will be equipped with 65 chargers
Swedish freight mobility company Einride has opened the largest operational charging site for electric heavy duty freight in North America.
The smart charger Station in Lynwood, California will be equipped with 65 chargers and the capacity to charge up to 200 vehicles a day.
Initially the site will serves Einride’s fleet of 300 electric trucks, but will eventually be opened to third party customers.
The site is located near the Port of Los Angeles, which handles 29pc of all containerised international waterborne trade in the US.
Einride regularly carries freight for shipping giant AP Moller-Maersk from the port.
“This facility will enable a key region to fast track to electric, given its proximity to the port of LA, one of the world’s busiest container ports and a driver of the US economy,” says Robert Falck, CEO of Einride.
The station will be equipped with Einride’s intelligent freight operating system, called Saga. The system will provide the firm and its customers with real-time updates on demand, location, timing, and utilisation of charging infrastructure.
The site was permitted, built and made operational in under 18 months. A report by consultancy Wood Mackenzie found that lead times for large DC fast charging stations can be as long as four years.
In 2022 Einride secured $500mn in equity and debt financing to expand its operations.
The site was built in collaboration with Voltera, a developer and owner of charging infrastructure for zero-emission vehicle fleets.
