Potential buyers of an all-electric Range Rover can now join a waiting list, UK OEM Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has confirmed.
“We are now opening the official waiting list for the opportunity to be among the first to place a pre-order for the most anticipated Range Rover of recent times,” says Geraldine Ingham, managing director, Range Rover.
The first Range Rover Electrics have been built and these prototypes are currently undergoing engineering sign-off programmes, ahead of a 2024 launch. Global on-road testing has started, from Sweden to Dubai, in temperatures ranging from -40C to +50C, JLR says.
The physical testing programme has been adapted for Range Rover’s first fully electric vehicle to ensure robustness of the electric drive system, including its underfloor, battery durability, chassis integrity and vehicle dynamics tests for thermal derating, the firm continues.
The new model will have 800V architecture to enable rapid public charging. Batteries and electric drive units will be assembled at JLR’s new Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton in central England.
Range Rover Electric will be built on JLR’s flexible MLA platform in Solihull, also in central England, alongside existing mild and extended-range PHEV Range Rover vehicles. “Range Rover Electric will slot into the range alongside its mild hybrid and plug-in electric hybrid siblings, offering a breadth of options to meet our clients’ needs,” says Thomas Mueller, executive director of product engineering at JLR.
JLR is a subsidiary of Indian OEM Tata Motors. Its parent committed in July to developing a £4bn ($5.2bn) battery cell production facility with 40GWh of annual capacity by 2030 in the UK’s southwest.
