The legacy OEM is all-in on electrification
The European platform has big ambitions stateside
Denmark’s Monta, a charging operating platform, has inaugurated a new US headquarters in Miami, FL, ahead of bringing its EV charging software to market in the country.
The firm aims to welcome 30 employees to its new US HQ by the end of 2025. The expansion plan also foresees connecting 25,000 commercial charge points to its platform by the end of 2025 and 1mn by the end of 2030.
Monta cites data — a quarter of all charges are unsuccessful, and an additional 12pc are successful but with reduced power — from Canadian EV charging software firm Chargehub to illustrate that the US charging experience continues pose issues.
“This is due to various issues ranging from user interface problems, deficient software glitches, and complex payment processes on several mobile apps and credit card readers,” Monta concludes. “Software tools are needed to enable a smoother, better-optimized charging experience and unlock EV adoption at scale in the US.” And it is confident it can play a role in solving these challenges.
“Monta’s software platform is the backbone enabling [a] critical transition in energy and mobility,” says Casper Rasmussen, CEO and co-founder of Monta. “The success we have and will keep having in the UK and Europe is the fuel of our experience and US expansion.
“As EV adoption picks up pace in the US, industry players will need a platform like ours to take their business to the next level. Our customers and partners, many of whom already operate in the US or have plans to expand there, have been asking us to bring Monta’s solution across the Atlantic to continue fuelling growth across the EV charging infrastructure ecosystem,” Rasmussen continues.
Founded in late 2020, Monta’s pitch to its European customers is that its software simplifies and streamlines the deployment, use, and management of EV charging infrastructure. Its solution also promises to assist hardware manufacturers in optimising their products by enabling them to benchmark charge point brands, provide insights into usage and performance, and speed up troubleshooting and maintenance time.
The firm currently boasts of 2mn monthly charging sessions and 165,000 commercial charge points on its platform. It targets a range of customers, from global heavyweights like Siemens, hardware manufacturers and charge point operators (CPOs).
Instant access
For its foray into the US, Monta has partnered with San Francisco-based Emobi, one of the largest EV charging ecosystems in North America, immediately bringing its software to more than 118,000 charge points.
“By supporting Monta’s growth, we are giving their customers instant access to charging networks and e-mobility partners across the US, accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles and making it a more seamless transition for all stakeholders,” says Lin Sun Fa, CEO of Emobi.
In total, Monta can point to 750+ partners, with the Monta platform having 165,000 commercial charging points under supervision. Its software is compatible with over 500 charge point models, the firm says.
Its customers’ employees and drivers can access 600,000 public charging points across Europe through its platform, to which the 118,000+ in the US will add. Monta is present in nine European countries — Denmark, France, Sweden, Norway, the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands — and operates in 32 in total through its partners.
Since its creation, the company has raised €130mn ($141mn) in funding from various backers, most recently an €80mn raise in January of this year.
